135 new projects in the areas of food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture & environment are starting their research

The EU is investing €897 million in new projects that will contribute to the sustainable transformation of the EU economy and society in the areas of food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and the environment. Funded under the Horizon Europe Programme, AquaPLAN is one of 135 new projects that are expected to play a crucial role in advancing the EU’s ambitions and commitments outlined in the EU Green Deal. They will improve the management of natural resources, prevent and reverse the loss of biodiversity, lessen environmental degradation and ensure the security of food and water. The EU Circular Economy Action Plan, EU Zero Pollution Action Plan, EU Bioeconomy Strategy Action Plan, EU Soil, EU Biodiversity, EU Forests and EU Farm-to-Fork strategies are some of the EU policies and strategies that these EU-funded projects will also support through their innovative and sustainable solutions.

AquaPLAN and its sister project, PLAN-B are among the 32 projects funded under the Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment – 2023 call for ‘Biodiversity and ecosystem services’. It is expected that these projects will help identify and address the main drivers of biodiversity loss in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Some of the projects are anticipated to, among other things, evaluate the impacts and consequences of chemical pollutants and create strategies to enhance the conservation status of species and habitats protected by the EU. Other projects like AquaPLAN and PLAN-B will assess the impact of light and noise pollution on biodiversity while others will enhance greening plans in urban and peri-urban areas to meet the objectives set in the Nature Conservation law. The successful projects were selected from seven competitive calls for proposals, which opened on 22 December 2022. A total of 568 proposals were submitted. The successful projects were those that received the highest ranking in peer evaluation run by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) and independent experts.
