EC establishes European Ocean Board and launches call for experts to advise on ocean policy

The European Commission (EC) is calling for applications from experts for the European Ocean Board, a new expert group established under the European Ocean Pact – the EU’s overarching framework for ocean governance adopted in June 2025. The Board will help shape future EU ocean policy by providing strategic advice, expert opinions and fostering coherence across marine‑related initiatives and sectors.

The EC has opened a four‑week call for applications, inviting experts and organisations with strong experience in ocean science, maritime economy, and coastal or marine policy to join the Board. Up to 25 members will be selected based on expertise, seniority and English‑language proficiency. Members will serve for up to five years, with the first meeting scheduled for March 2026. Travel costs will be reimbursed, though positions are unpaid.

Once established, the Board will play a key role in supporting upcoming EU initiatives, especially the ocean observation initiative, which aims to strengthen knowledge, research, innovation and ocean literacy. The EC emphasises that the Board will contribute to aligning EU policies with private sector efforts, supporting sustainable development across Europe’s marine and coastal regions.

The call is open to civil society organisations and experts from across the EU, ensuring broad geographical and thematic representation. With this step, the EC aims to accelerate progress toward healthier, more resilient ocean ecosystems and a stronger, sustainable blue economy.
