DARKER SKY
Supporting municipalities and ports to protect nature with the implementation of light-reduction solutions
DARKER SKY is an Interreg North Sea project (ERDF funding) which aims at reducing light pollution and increasing biodiversity and ecological connectivity in the North Sea Region (France, Germany, the Netherlands & Denmark). We are providing municipalities and ports with innovative measuring, monitoring and co-design methods for the implementation of environmentally sound and energy-efficient light reduction benefitting biodiversity and communities.
Main outputs include:
- Policy framework strategy: A collection of regional strategies to enhance the implementation and adoption of policies addressing light pollution.
- Light pollution mapping and monitoring guide: A guideline on easy-to-adapt methods, tools and technical specifications to map and monitor light pollution and its environmental impact.
- Light reduction solutions implemented and evaluated: 8 different environmentally-sound light installations, co-developed with stakeholders and citizens, implemented and evaluated in 6 pilot regions.
- Six Regional action plans for the roll-out of light reduction solutions: Providing local policy makers with guidance and practical requirements for the implementation of sustainable lighting infrastructure.
- Transnational strategy to reduce light pollution and strengthen dark ecological corridors: A collaborative effort to develop recommendations for transnational/EU uptake of light pollution in related regulations.
