Equilibri di Luce e Buio (Balance of Light & Darkness) Workshop in Parma

On Wednesday 4 December 2024, University of Parma is organising the workshop ‘Equilibri di Luce e Buio’ or ‘Balance of Light and Darkness: Towards shared knowledge and participatory management of light pollution’. The afternoon workshop has a packed schedule of talks, all given by prestigious speakers covering a diversity of topics related to light pollution, from environmental and human health impacts to safety, monitoring and solutions!

The workshop aims to explore the many effects of light pollution, the full effects of which are still largely unknown and often underestimated despite growing scientific evidence that indicates it is impacting our health, wildlife and many other aspects of our daily life. Bringing together experts from various academic and professional fields, including associations and those in lighting design who are interested in exploring the concerns related to light and darkness. The workshop will provide an opportunity for discussions as well as raising awareness of actions that can be taken to reduce light pollution. Among the invited speakers is our AquaPLAN coordinator Elena Maggi (University of Pisa). Elena will speak about AquaPLAN’s ongoing work to quantify the combined impacts of light and noise pollution on aquatic biodiversity and our potential strategies for managing these pollutants, her talk is entitled ‘Mosaics of light and darkness in urban ecosystems: Challenges in managing light pollution in aquatic environments’.

Organised and moderated by Osman Arrobbio (Environmental Sociologist) and Niccolo Bertuzzi (Political Sociologist) from the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Enterprises (University of Parma). The workshop is free to attend and will run from 14:30-18:15 at DUSIC, Room B, via D’Azeglio 85, University of Parma.
