PLAN‑B invites public to explore light pollution mapping app “Lost at Night”

AquaPLAN is pleased to spotlight an upcoming initiative from our sister project, PLAN‑B, which is advancing innovative approaches to environmental monitoring through citizen science. PLAN‑B has announced an interactive online workshop showcasing its “Lost at Night” application (app) – a cutting-edge tool designed to map light pollution using images captured from the International Space Station (ISS).

Light pollution is an increasingly recognised environmental challenge, affecting ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. The “Lost at Night” app offers a novel way to address this issue by enabling users to contribute to the creation of a global light pollution map. The tool works by combining citizen input with georeferenced imagery from the ISS, helping researchers better understand the spatial distribution and intensity of artificial light at night. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn directly from the project team as PLAN‑B researchers Francisco Sanz and Alejandro Sanchez de Miguel will present the latest updates to the app, outline its scientific goals, and demonstrate how participants can engage with the platform. The session will provide attendees with a hands-on introduction to the app and highlight the importance of public participation in environmental data collection.

As sister projects, AquaPLAN and PLAN‑B share a commitment to improving environmental governance and supporting sustainable practices through research and innovation. This workshop represents an excellent opportunity for the wider community, including researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, to engage with new tools and contribute to a growing body of knowledge on light pollution.
AquaPLAN encourages its partners and stakeholders to take part in this session and to share the invitation with colleagues who may be interested in citizen science and environmental monitoring.
