EC seeks feedback on the Ocean Observation Initiative

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to help shape the European Ocean Observation Initiative, a key component of the European Ocean Pact, aimed at strengthening Europe’s capacity to generate and share high‑quality marine knowledge. Open until 27 February 2026, the consultation seeks input from stakeholders, experts and citizens to guide a forthcoming Commission Communication that will enhance coordination of ocean observation across Europe, ensure reliable data collection and sharing, and bolster the EU’s autonomy and leadership in global ocean‑monitoring technologies.

The initiative focuses on advancing marine research and innovation, developing new observation technologies, improving governance and data flows—including through assets like EMODnet, WISE‑Marine, and Copernicus Marine Service—and delivering a fully operational European Digital Twin of the Ocean by 2030. It also aims to foster international scientific collaboration and engage citizens by connecting science, education, and the arts to deepen public understanding of the ocean.
